Laura Secord Commemorative Hike – Event Recap

Yesterday, members and friends of the Niagara Bruce Trail Club came together for our annual Laura Secord Commemorative Hike—an inspiring journey that blends local history, community spirit, and the beauty of the Niagara section of the Bruce Trail. The weather cooperated, the energy was high, and hikers of all experience levels shared a memorable day on the trail.

The hike pays tribute to Laura Secord, one of Canada’s most enduring historical figures. Born in 1775, Secord is best known for her courageous 32‑kilometre trek during the War of 1812. After overhearing American officers planning a surprise attack, she set out on foot from Queenston through dense forest and challenging terrain to warn British and allied Haudenosaunee forces. Her message helped them prepare and ultimately succeed at the Battle of Beaver Dams. Today, she is celebrated as a symbol of bravery, perseverance, and quiet determination.

Our route followed sections of the landscape Laura Secord once crossed—thankfully with well‑marked paths and far fewer hazards. Hikers enjoyed lush early‑summer greenery, birdsong along the escarpment, and the camaraderie that comes from shared adventure. Volunteers stationed along the way offered guidance, encouragement, and a few fun historical tidbits to bring Secord’s story to life.

At the finish, participants gathered to share snacks, swap trail stories, and reflect on the significance of retracing such an iconic journey. For many, the hike was both a physical challenge and a meaningful reminder of the resilience woven into Niagara’s history.

A heartfelt thank‑you to all hikers, volunteers, and organizers who made the event a success. Your enthusiasm keeps our community strong and helps preserve the trail for future generations. We look forward to seeing you on the next adventure.
